BOP vs general liability alone

  • Choose a BOP if you rent an office, shop or studio, keep inventory, or own equipment you couldn’t easily replace.
  • Choose general liability alone if you work from home or online and your only equipment is a laptop and phone.
  • Add professional liability either way if clients pay for your advice or expertise.

Frequently asked questions

What is a business owner’s policy (BOP)?

A package that combines general liability and commercial property insurance — and usually business interruption coverage — into one policy, typically priced lower than buying each separately.

How much does a BOP cost?

The median is $83 a month ($990 a year) among Insureon’s small-business customers, with annual premiums from about $400 to over $6,000. Consultants pay about $55 a month; high-interaction businesses $131–$190.

Who qualifies for a BOP?

Insurers generally offer BOPs to small, lower-risk businesses with a physical location, equipment or inventory — offices, retail shops, studios, small restaurants. High-risk trades may need separate policies.

What doesn’t a BOP cover?

Professional mistakes (professional liability), employee injuries (workers’ comp), vehicles (commercial auto) and, usually, cyber incidents. Those are bought separately or as endorsements.

BOP or general liability alone?

If the LLC owns or rents space, equipment or inventory worth protecting, a BOP usually costs less than GL plus a separate property policy. If you work from home with only a laptop, general liability alone is often enough.
